Mules Shutout Mammoths

Amherst, Massachusetts- The Colby College Men's Hockey team made their way over to Amherst College to play the Mammoths in a NESCAC matchup after a tough loss against Hamilton College the night before.

The first period started off hot, with Jusitn Grillo taking a boarding penalty only 3:40 into the period. The Mules were able to kill off the penalty with Andy Beran making several key saves to prevent the Mammoths from gaining an early lead. First-year Abdoul Diouf scored his first career goal at the top of the faceoff circle from a feed from Jake Klein, after receiving the puck from John McElaney to put the Mules up 1-0 with just over 8:30 left to play. Just under five minutes later, Klein and McElaney would get another set of assists after Klein found an open Quinn Doyle at the blue line, where he would beat the Amherst goaltender just above his left shoulder. The Mules would be given a power play opportunity with three minutes left but were unable to capitalize. The Mules would finish the period leading 2-0 but would be tasked with killing the remainder of Will Molson's penalty.

The Mules in the second period gave up three power play opportunities to the Mammoths during the second period on top. Luckily, the penalty kill units were able to kill off all three, despite Amherst generating lots of offensive opportunities. Andy Beran made ten saves in the second period to help the Mules maintain their 2-0 lead heading into the final twenty minutes.

The Mules were able to maintain their composure and looking to add another goal to their 2-0 lead. Andy Beran was once again tested serval times but stood strong to keep the shutout going. After generating several offensive opportunities, the Mules finally found the back of the net once again after Justin Grillo found Carter Breitenfeldt from behind the net to put the Mules up 3-0 with only four and a half minutes to play. The Mules would be able to hold off the Mammoths for the rest of the game, winning 3-0. Sophomore goaltender Andy Beran would make 36 saves to earn his third shutout of the season.

The Mules next play on January 11, at 7 PM against #10 University of New England in Biddeford, Maine. Go Mules!
