Waterville, Maine - Colby challenged the Wesleyan University Cardinals on a weeknight NESCAC matchup. The game was rescheduled from last weekend due to COVID, so the teams are lucky to be able to safely compete against each other. Wesleyan's record is currently 6-0 while being 2-0 in the NESCAC, while Colby is 7-1 and 3-1 in the NESCAC, making tonight's game an important indication how the NESCAC will fall this season. This was the first night in weeks that the Mules competed in the conference and brought high energy to this midweek game.
In the first period, play was relatively dominated by Colby in terms of shots on goal. In the first period alone Colby fired 11 shots and were able to bring the score 1-0 by the end of the period.
McKinley Karpa scored the first goal of the game with an assist from
Jillian Mazzocca and
Georgia Pettygrove, 10:40 into the first period. Despite having a power play attempt, Wesleyan was unable to get more than four shots on goal, all saved by Colby goalkeeper Nina Prunster.
Going into the second period up 1-0, the Mules were confident but not cocky. Wesleyan got their feet under them and brought a much more even game in the second period. Colby only outshot Wesleyan 11-9. Yet still, Colby's
Tate Senden scored with an assist from
Anna Staton and
Sadie Kuhn only 4:17 into the period. As for Colby defense, they tacked on nine more saves holding Wesleyan to zero goals, making the score 2-0 in favor of Colby at the end of the second.
In the third period, the Mules were not able to hold Wesleyan any longer for a shut out. Despite a shutout being in the realm of possibilities because Colby has had four already this season. Wesleyan was able to get on the board with a goal from Jenna Rekoske 4:58 into the final period. Wesleyan came into the third period with a new fire and outshot Colby 14-10 but the last fifteen minutes of the period remained scoreless and the Mules came out with a 2-1 win.
Colby Women's Hockey will have a bye week and play Middlebury College at home on January 21st and 22nd at 7:00pm and 3:00pm, respectively.
