Men's Soccer Tops Bobcats in OT, Punch Playoff Ticket

Lewiston, Maine- The Mule's traveled down to Lewiston to play Bates this week in the final game of the regular season. Colby won the match in overtime with a final box score of 2-1,  putting Colby in to the NESCAC playoffs! The victory brings Colby to 7-7-1 for the season and drops Bates to 6-9-0. 

On this rainy Tuesday afternoon, Maine rivals Bates and Colby played in a muddy battle, for a final spot in the NESCAC playoffs. Tensions were high starting the match with Colby needing a tie or a win to move on and Bates needing a win. In the first half the Colby players had 11 shots, five of which landed on net. in the half, all shots on net were taken from players Paul Hawkins and Mario Simoes. Hawkins first shot taken in the 29th minute of play was blocked and shots taken in the 39th and 41st minute saved by the Bates keeper. Simoes had two shots in the half, both being header shots,  in the 29th minute and  31st minute, both saved by Bates keeper. Shots came also from Ethan Franco, Graham Pugh, Aidan O'brien and Max Farner. Meanwhile, Bates made two shots on net in the first half, both saved by Colby keeper Noah Jackson. The first half ended with a score of 0-0. 

In the second half the rivals played even more agressively. In the sixth minute of play, Colby's Jack Fletcher put a shot on net, but Bates made a team save. In the 23rd minute of play, Jackson made a save off of a header shot from a Bates player. Finally, in the 33rd minute of the second half, the Mule's scored. Josh Rubin was able to put the ball into the Bates net with an assist by Paul Hawkins for his ninth goal of the season. The goal brought the score to 1-0 Mules leading  A shot minutes after the goal, hurtled towards the Mules net, but Jackson made the save. In the 41st minute, Bates evened the score. The goal from Bates brought the score to 1-1 in a tie game. Mules keeper, Jackson made a save with seconds remaining on the clock. The first 90 minutes of regular play ended with a box score of 1-1. 

In the first overtime, the pressure was at its peak. The first shot came from Bates, but was blocked by Colby defense. In response, Rubin had a shot just wide of net in the fifth minute. In the sixth minute of overtime, following a corner kick taken by Franco, Colby scored off an own goal from a Bates player. The goal stopped the clock and finished the game, securing Colby's spot in the NESCAC playoffs!! The final box score of the match was 2-1, Mules in the lead.
