Hat Trick and PK Leads to Striking 9-2 Victory Over MMA

Waterville, Maine- The Colby Mules played against Maine Maritime Academy on Tuesday, under the lights. The Mules won the game with a final box score of 9-2. The win for the Mules bring their overall season stats to 5-5-1 and drops Maine Maritime to 6-7-1. 

The Mules asserted their dominance early on in the match. Colby controlled possession of the ball and pushed through Maine Maritimes' defense for a shot by Ethan Fabricant in the fourth minute, wide of the net. Fabricant followed with another shot that was blocked two minutes later. In the eleventh minute of play, MMA took a header shot off of a penalty kick called after a foul on Colby. The Maine Maritime player was able to head the ball into the net, scoring the first goal of the game. This goal brought the score to 0-1 with Maine Maritime in the lead. Colby regained possession immediately after the goal and continued to attack the MMA net. Shots from Fabricant, Ethan Franco, and Arkam Traore followed. In the 31st minute of play, the Mules evened the score. Colby freshman Mario Simoes scored his first goal of the season with an assist from Franco, brining the score to 1-1. Two minutes later Simoes scored again, this time assisted by Justin Lauer after a cross from the corner, in the 33rd minute. This brought the box score to 2-1 Colby in the lead. Simoes took a third shot on goal 20 seconds later, but the MMA keeper saved the ball.  In the 40th minute of play senior Mule Paul Hawkins scored his third goal of the season with an assist from Josh Rubin. The goal brought the score to 3-1, Mule's. The half ended, but not before Simoes managed to secure a hat trick. In the 44th minute,  Colin Sullivan crossed the ball to Simoes who taped it in at the near post, for his third goal of the game. The half came to a close with a final box score of 4-1 Colby in the lead. 

The second half was just as eventful as the first. The first shot came in the second minute of play from Colby senior Nicholas Lemire, just wide of the net. A few minutes later, Colby's Franco scored his sixth goal of the season. The goal came from Franco when he took a shot from just past midfield, driving the ball into the box before finding the bottom corner past the outstretched keeper's arm. This goal brought the box score to 5-1 , Colby in the lead. Maine Maritime was quick to respond, with a goal in the sixth minute, brining the score to 5-2. Senior striker Fabricant dominated the following serious of plays for the Mules. Fabricant took a shot in the tenth minute that was saved by MMA goalie, but possession was not maintained. Fabricant was right there for any falters, and tapped the ball into the net, for his first goal of the season. This brought the box score to 6-2. Fabricant was not done yet. After a penalty was called against MMA, Fabricant took a PK and scored. The goal brought the score to 7-2 for the Mule's. Colby keeper Brendan McCarthy made two saves in the next few minutes as Maine Maritime attempted to change the score. Despite these shots, Colby maintained possession. In the 17th minute of the second half, Arkam Traore took a corner kick, leading to the 8th goal for Colby. The goal came from Colby junior Rubin for his 8th goal of the season, assisted by Jered Garrison. As the clock ran out, MMA tested the Colby keeper a few more times, but McCarthy saved all shots, keeping the Mule's in the lead. With almost four minute remaining, Colby's Rubin score his second goal of the season, this time assisted by Eric Seaman after he made a fast break through MMA's defense. The half ended with a final box score of 9-2 with a striking victory for the Mules.
