The ONE COLBY Campaign: Standing Together

In spirit of Colby's 2020 fall re-opening, the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) has partnered with the Student Government Association (SGA) and College Senior Staff to present the One Colby Campaign. The campaign was launched as a reminder that all must come together to make the Colby community safe and inclusive to everyone. To further encourage this mindset, students have been sporting "One Colby" rubber bracelets, with which they also received a card detailing the movement's purpose. The card states: "One Colby stands as a creed and assertion that we will take responsibility for our actions and prioritize the greater good of the community before our own self interests."

Colby College President David Greene says that to him, "[One Colby] is a powerful statement because it reminds us all that in this community we are deeply connected, and our individual actions can impact others or even the entire community."

The student-led commitment to practice authentic allyship and hold one another accountable while extending support to every single community member, was prompted by most recent events regarding racial injustices in the United States. SAAC co-president Robyn Pirie '21 says, "One Colby initially began as a part of our commitment as SAAC to rise up together to challenge the racial injustices that we are witnessing across the world."  When the College announced their decision to bring all students back to campus, the campaign extended its purpose to cover safety and responsibility regarding COVID-19.

SAAC hopes this campaign reiterates their dedication to support each other in these times of uncertainty, and the blue rubber bracelets serve as a daily reminder for everyone to do so. It acknowledges that the future for students and staff on Mayflower Hill is dependent on the communities' actions, therefore everyone has the responsibility to dictate how that looks for the whole. Greene adds, "I wear my One Colby bracelet with pride and to never forget that I share the responsibility with everyone else here to protect this community and the exceptional opportunity we have to be together."

"So far it seems as though most community members are buying into the concept of One Colby and putting the health and safety of the community above else," adds Pirie.  "I'm excited to see how One Colby develops over time and how the community continues to work together as One Colby."  As the campaign mentions, "The work does not end here. Rather, this is where it begins."
