Box Score WATERVILLE, Maine - On the day that Colby baseball found out that their season would be cut short, the team rallied around their seniors for a game to remember against rival Bowdoin.
Bowdoin went up early in the first inning as a result of a pair of errors. The Mules, led by senior pitcher Emery Dinsmore, were able to quickly bounce back plating two runs in the bottom of the third. For the first score, senior captain Will Phillips grounded into a fielder's choice, allowing Matt Panker to reach home. The second run came off the bat of junior captain Andrew Russell hwo tripled to the fence in right-center. Genki LeClair was able to come all the way around from first to take the lead.
The next few innings were quiet for both the Polar Bears and the Mules, as neither team could push a run across the plate. However, in the eighth both teams were able to break through. Bowdoin scored three times which put them in the lead 4-2. In the bottom of the eighth, senior George Schmidt singled to get on base and then proceeded to steal second and third and eventually score on an error to bring the score to within one run heading into the ninth.
In the ninth John Doyle came in to pitch for the Mules and shut down Bowdoin to give Colby the chance they needed for a comeback. The first two batters for Colby, Dylan Nastri and senior captain William Wessman, reached base safely and were replaced by pinch runners Henry Suarez and Charlie Furlong, respectively. Tommy McGee was then able to get on base and move Suarez and Furlong over to load the bases. Schmidt came up to bat with only one out and the bases loaded. He gound ball single just out of the reach of the second baseman brought home Suarez, and the throw from the outfield was not in time to stop Furlong right behind. The Mules walked off in the bottom of the ninth, sending the crowd into mayhem and emptying the Mules' bench. Final score: 5-4.
Colby pitchers combined for seventeen strikeouts. Dinsmore went for 4.0 innings, giving up four hits and one unearned run while striking out six.
Colby seniors Dinsmore, Phillips, Schmidt, Wieder, Matt Reasor, senior captain Taimu Ito, Cam Drew, and Wessman all participated in their final game and played integral parts in the Mule's victory. They combined for three of the Mule's five RBIs.
Colby will not play again this season and will miss its eight seniors, but hope that this game will prove to be a life long memory for all involved.
