Mules up early, fall to Tufts in home opener

Waterville, Maine - The Colby College Women's Lacrosse team opened the 2020 season jumping out to an early lead before eventually falling to the 2019 NESCAC runner-ups, Tufts University by a score of 19-5. 

GAME NOTES: Despite temperatures in the low 30's, with snow and wind chill adding to the atmosphere of winter in Maine, a healthy crowd of over 250 showed up for the home opener.  The Mules greeted their fans with early leads before eventually falling behind midway through the first half to the mighty Tufts scoring attack.  

HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE MULES: 

  • First-year Annie Eddy began her Colby career with a hat trick, accounting for three of Colby's goals on five shots.  
  • The other two goals came from Grace Langmuir (photo right) and Eliza Dean who had one goal apiece.  
  • Goalkeeper Emily Podgorni had 12 saves in net. 

HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE JUMBOS: 

  • Emily Games and Catherine Lawliss were the top scorers for Tufts with five and four goals respectively.
  • Molly Laliberty made a total of six saves to end the day with a 55% save percentage.
  • Lindsey Erickson led the Jumbos with four ground balls. 

KEY STATS: 

  • Colby and Tufts split draw controls with 12 apiece.
  • Tufts unleashed a total of 44 shots against Colby compared to 16 for the home team.
  • The visitors had 11 free positions compared to only four for the Mules.

NEXT MATCHUP: The Mules won't have much downtime leading up to their next game this coming Tuesday.  Colby hosts Roger Williams on March 3rd at 4:00pm.
