Men's Ice Hockey holds on to tie Middlebury, 3-3

WATERVILLE, Maine-  The Colby College Men's Ice Hockey team battled against Middlebury College to a tie 3-3.

GAME NOTES: The Mules were down 2-1 after two periods. Colby's power play came alive and scored two goals in the third. With under two minutes left in regulation, the Panthers scored the tying goal to head to overtime. Both teams had opportunities to take the victory, but each team's goaltender provided great denials. Colby moves to 5-9-2 overall (2-7-1 NESCAC).

HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE MULES:

  • Carter Breitenfeldt cut the deficit at 16:08 in the first period. Justin Grillo (headline photo) and Michael Morrissey assisted on the power play goal.
  • In the third period Alex Bourhas scored another power play goal at 4:29. Spencer Hewson (photo inset) with his first point of the night on the set up.
  • Later in the third,  Grillo scored his power play goal at the 12:20 mark. Hewson tallied his second assist as Logan Clarke got the secondary..
  • In net Andrew Tucci turned in another solid performance stopping 37 shots. His overall record now is 2-7-2.

HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE PANTHERS:

  • Middlebury jump out ahead at 1:53 in the first. Tyler Capello rifled the puck in off the Mitchell Allen assist.
  • Just shy of two minutes later Owen Powers tallied a goal for the night. Emack Bentley and Zach Shapiro assisted on the play at 3:50.
  • Finding their back against the wall, Middlebury scored with the Bentley goal at 18:38. Brendan Dawson assisted on the tying goal.
  • Between the pipes, Adam Wisco recorded 19 saves.

KEY STATS: 

  • Grillo now leads the team with 12 points (five goals, seven assists).
  • At the end of regulation the shots were in favor of the Panthers 37-20. After scoring chances slipped by each team through overtime, the shots were 40-23 in Middlebury's favor.
  • Colby took the slight lead in faceoffs, controlling the dots 28-26.
  • The power play unit for the Mules capitalized ending the night 3 for 5, as the penalty kill held the Panthers 0 for 2.

NEXT MATCHUP: Colby Men's Ice Hockey now looks on to face the University of Southern Maine in non conference play Tuesday night (1/28). Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00pm at the Alfond Rink.
