Box Score WATERVILLE, Maine- The Colby College Men's Ice Hockey team took a big NESCAC victory, beating Amherst College 4-1.
GAME NOTES: First year Goaltender Andy Beran (headline photo) secured his first conference win with a stellar performance in goal. With 26 saves on the night, Beran's save percentage moves to .968 overall. The Mules scoring was lead by Justin Grillo, who finished with a power play goal and assist.
HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE MULES:
- Quinn Doyle (photo inset) scored his first goal of the season at 8:23 in the first period.
- Less than two minutes after Kienan Scott increased the lead to 2-0. Grillo with the assist at 9:54.
- Grillo blasted the power play goal in the net to make the score 3-0 after the first period. Logan Clarke assisted on the play.
- Mark Leprine secured the victory with a empty net goal at 17:46 in the third period.
HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE MAMMOTHS:
- Amherst rallied quickly at the start of the second period, scoring 30 seconds into the frame. Patrick Daly scored the goal from the Mammoths coming off the assists from P.J.Conlon and Nick Bondra.
- Falling behind in shots after the first period, Amherst took the shots lead 27-25.
- Dan Dachille made 16 saves coming into the matchup because of injury.
KEY STATS:
- Colby's penalty kill played strong short handed, not allowing the Mammoths to score on four power play opportunities. In conference play the Mules have now stopped 18 of 20 power plays.
- Leprine is now second for points on the team with seven.
- The Mules controlled the faceoff dots taking 30 of 55
QUOTE: "It's a good win, All the teams in our league are so good. Amherst has a lot of team speed and i thought we got off to a good start and they pushed right back to start the second period. I thought it was a really gutsy effort. We did what we had to do to win the game. We had terrific goal tending from first year Andy Beran. We got some timely goals, good to see Quinn Doyle get his first goal, good effort by a lot of guys hopefully that will carry into tomorrow for us," said the Jack Kelley Head Coach for Colby Men's Hockey Blaise MacDonald.
NEXT MATCHUP: Colby Men's Ice Hockey looks to continue their win streak when Hamilton College comes to the Alfond Rink, Saturday 1/11. Game time is scheduled for 3:00pm start.
