Baseball opens season with dominant win, settles for split

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Colby College baseball team exploded for 20 hits and scored 13 runs in the opening four innings in a 13-4 season-opening win over Keuka College on the opening day of the Florida spring break trip Saturday.

The Mules (1-1 overall) fell 5-2 in the nightcap.
Brooks Parker pitched six innings and allowed just two earned runs while striking out six and walking just one in the opener. Patrick Carbone made his collegiate pitching debut and struck out two in the final inning for Colby.
Will Phillips was 4-for-5 with three runs scored for the Mules. Colby captain Matt Treveloni was 3-for-4, scored three runs, and drove in three runs. Ben Coleman, who led the Mules in batting average last year, started out with three hits, two runs, and one RBI. Andrew Sterup (pictured) also had three hits and scored one run, Jackson Ward had two hits and two runs, and catcher George Schmidt had two hits, drove in two, and scored once.
The Mules scored twice in the first when William Wessman reached on a fielder's choice and had an RBI when Coleman scored. On the same play, the Keuka second baseman had a throwing error to allow Treveloni to score from second base.
Coleman had an RBI single and Treveloni brought in two runs with a double in a four-run second inning. The Mules scored the other run when Sterup scored on a Keuka error.
Schmidt had an RBI single to bring in Phillips with a lone run in the third inning for the Mules. Colby scored its final six runs of the game in the fourth inning on RBI doubles by Schmidt and Treveloni. Tyler Mulberry added an RBI single and Wessman had a sacrifice fly. Colby scored its other two runs on an error.
In the second game, Keuka (4-4 overall) scored a lone run in the first inning and added three in the fourth.
The Mules cut the lead in half at 4-2 on an RBI double by Sterup that scored Mulberry and an RBI single by Matt Mitchell to bring in Sterup. The Wolves, though, added a single run in the top of the seventh for the final run.
Sterup finished up a 5-for-8 day with two hits, one RBI, and a run scored. Treveloni, Wessman, Phillips, and Jonah Katz also had hits.
The Mules play Union College in a Sunday doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. at Winter Haven,
