WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Colby College women's hockey team gave fourth-ranked Middlebury College a battle for 60 minutes in a tough 2-0 loss at Alfond Rink on Friday.
The Mules drop to 7-11-4 overall and 2-9-4 in the NESCAC, while the Panthers move to 15-4-2 and 11-1-1 in the league. The two teams play again Saturday at 3 p.m.
Game highlights
* Middlebury scored 6:39 into the second period and then added an empty net goal with just one second remaining.
* The Panthers' game-winning goal started when Haley Lafontaine went back to retrieve a puck behind her own net. She immediately fired a pass to Ellie Barney at the blue line. Barney quickly picked up speed and got a break when a Colby defender lost a blade while coming up to defend. Barney was able to go in on goal and scored on a low shot to the right corner.
* Katherine Jackson added the empty net goal for the Panthers.
By the numbers
* Lily Han stopped 15 shots in goal to earn the shutout for the Panthers.
* Colby goaltender Cierra San Roman (pictured) was strong again with 35 saves and just the one goal allowed.
* Both teams had three power play opportunities and failed to capitalize.
