MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- The Colby College football team put together another fine opening quarter for the third straight week, but could not keep the momentum in a 37-6 loss to Middlebury College on Saturday.
The Mules (0-3 overall) will play at Wesleyan University next Saturday at 1 p.m.
Game highlights
* Colby led 6-3 after the opening quarter thanks to a 21-yard scoring pass from Jack O'Brien to Jake Schwern. The Mules were 0-0 after a quarter with Trinity College and led 7-0 after 15 minutes against Williams College.
* Middlebury's Carter Massengill started the scoring with a 27-yard field goal with 7:53 left in the opening quarter.
* Colby scored 4:49 later on a drive of 34 yards in three plays. AJ Carrigan caused a fumble and Nick Strand recovered on the Panther 34-yard line.
* The Mules had a chance to go up 9-3, but had a field goal attempt blocked.
* Conrado Banky had two touchdown catches of 5 and 18 yards from quarterback Jared Lebowitz to help the Panthers (3-0) go up 17-6 at halftime.
* Colby had a 46-yard kickoff return from Schwern to start the second half. However, the drive stalled on the Panther 17-yard line and the Mules were stopped on a fourth down play.
* Middlebury added another touchdown pass from Lebowitz with 1:07 left in the third quarter to make it 24-6. The Panthers added a punt return for a score and a 25-yard scoring run from Charlie Ferguson in the final quarter.
By the numbers
* Schwern caught three passes for 26 yards, ran 13 times for 46 yards, and had 82 yards on three kickoff returns.
* First-year wide receiver Bernie Sander caught three balls for 39 yards.
* O'Brien threw for 91 yards and rushed for 13. Harry Kraft completed his first two passes as a Mule for 21 yards.
* Colby punter John Baron averaged a solid 40.5 yards on 11 kicks.
* Sebastien Philemon had six tackles and blocked a field goal for the Mules. Fellow linebacker Bryan McAdams and defensive tackle Patrick Sopko both had six tackles. Craig Strand added five tackles, while Don Vivian had one interception.
