Men's hockey blanks Camels, wins fourth straight game

Box Score

Jason Grillo WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College goaltender Sean Lawrence, the NESCAC Player of the Week for last week, remained sharp with 31 saves in posting his first shutout of the season in a 2-0 victory over Connecticut College in conference play Friday at Alfond Rink.

The Mules, winners of four straight games, improve to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play heading into Saturday's 3 p.m. home game with Tufts University. The Camels, who play at Bowdoin College at 4 p.m. Saturday, dropped to 2-4 overall and 2-3 in the league.

Game highlights
* The Mules had a 16-7 shot advantage in the first period and led 1-0 after Dan Dupont scored his first of the season off an assist from first-year Justin Grillo (pictured) and Mario Benicky at 16:32. Dupont's shot from the left side bounced off goalie Avery Gobbo and over the line.

* Neither team could manage a goal past Lawrence or Gobbo the rest of the way. The Mules closed out the game with an empty net goal by Phil Klitirinos with just 1:01 to play. Thomas Stahlhuth started the play with a long pass to Klitirinos, who slid the puck over to Cam MacDonald. The Camels' Dylan Chase made a terrific diving stop to briefly knock the puck away, but MacDonald was able to push the puck to Klitirinos for the easy stuff-in goal.

By the numbers
* Lawrence had to make 24 saves in the final two periods to get his second shutout with Colby. He had a 1-0 win over Hamilton College last season. Lawrence raised his save percentage to .957 and lowered his goals against average to 1.34.

* Gobbo also played well with 31 saves and just the one goal allowed. He made a terrific save on Colby's Michael Rudolf on an opening period power play attempt. Rudolf also was stopped on consecutive shots in the third period on two more good scoring chances.

* Rudolf had a game-high eight shots on goal, while Jacob Moreau led the Camels with five shots.
